Reaching out: Supporting services to engage with the most vulnerable drinkers
18 October - 19 October 2023

The people facing the most serious alcohol issues often face the greatest difficulties accessing support. At this online learning event, we’ll be discussing how we can better reach out to vulnerable drinkers.

Speakers include:

  • Mike Ward from Alcohol Change UK, on why cognitive impairment is about much more than Alcohol-related Brain Damage.
  • Cardiff and the Vale Drug and Alcohol Service (CAVDAS), on the benefits of undertaking assertive street outreach with peer supporters.
  • Adfam, sharing experiences of adults living with an intimate partner’s alcohol use.
  • Recovery Cymru, on the uniqueness of every recovery journey and how services need to respond.
  • Gemma Yarwood from Manchester Metropolitan University, on end-of-life care for people with substance use issues.

If you want to understand how best to help those in greatest need, then this is the conference for you.

Government consults on proposals to encourage more people to choose no and low-alcohol drinks

The government has launched a public consultation to make alternatives to alcoholic drinks more popular and more widely available and is seeking views on whether to raise the threshold for describing a drink as “alcohol free” from 0.05% to 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV). The deadline for responses is 23 November 2023.

Alcohol Change UK warmly welcomes the consultation and believes it will be of benefit to consumers, leading to even more people replacing alcoholic with non-alcoholic adult drinks even more often.

Views sought on the future of minimum unit pricing in Scotland

The Scottish Government is conducting a public consultation to gather views from people, businesses, public bodies and interested parties on the proposal to continue the effect of the minimum unit pricing legislation and, if continued, to set a new price of 65p per unit of alcohol going forward. The closing date is 22 November 2023.

New report highlights “unacceptably high level” of alcohol-related harm

A new report published by Turning Point, a leading provider of health and social care, suggests that harmful drinking is costing the NHS over £1 billion per year. The report, ‘A Sobering Thought’, highlights the devastating impact of alcohol-related harm and calls for urgent action to address the issue.

Tom Harding is taking on an epic running challenge between London and Bristol (280km or 7 marathons!) on 17-19 November in memory of his sister Katy. Hear about Tom’s reasons for taking on the challenge in his video and read more on his JustGiving page. There will be opportunities to join Tom in person for sections of his run or support him virtually by running where you are. If you’re interested, contact us.
