Teutopolis Anhydrous Ammonia Spill Being Cleaned Up
All residents of Teutopolis have been allowed back in their homes
SPRINGFIELD – The investigation into an accident and chemical spill near Teutopolis continues as local officials have determined that the danger to residents has passed. Teutopolis Assistant Fire Chief Joe Holomy is allowing residents to return to their homes. “Testing has indicated that the danger from the anhydrous ammonia has dissipated. We have notified residents that they may return home.”
There are five confirmed deaths with several reported injuries.
The tanker that contained anhydrous ammonia has been drained, patched, and removed to a secure location pending an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The Illinois State Police (ISP) is investigating the cause of the accident.
Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) Deputy Director of Emergency Management Clayton Kuetemeyer said, “We offer our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the accident and chemical spill. First responders and emergency managers train for this and many other kinds of emergencies with the goal of minimizing impact to people and property.”
