When Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) responds to an emergency, children are often among the most vulnerable. In fact, children under the age of 15 make up more than 60 percent of our patients.
Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, MSF is able to provide critical care to ensure our young patients’ health and safety. Take a look at the stories of some of these children and their caregivers this Child Health Day:
In Niger, MSF doctors treated two-year-old Latifa for malnutrition at the Magaria hospital. Her grandmother, Kanpe Alhassan, 41, was there every step of the way. She was supporting her pregnant daughter by taking care of Latifa, allowing her the time and space to take care of her other children:
“My daughter couldn't breastfeed Latifa any longer. That’s when the malnutrition started.”
In Jalmish, a remote valley of Shebar District in Bamyan Province, Afghanistan, an MSF midwife provided pediatric care to Khadija. She had a fever and cough caused by pneumonia. This MSF-supported community health facility was opened in March 2023 and provides a range of services including postnatal care, delivery and maternal care, pediatric consultations for children under five, malnutrition monitoring, and more.
Júlia Lobo is a Brazilian psychologist who is a part of the mental health team in Roraima, Brazil. Many of her patients are Venezuelan migrant children who are often angry and frustrated because they have been forcibly displaced through no fault of their own. She is helping them navigate these feelings and more:
“Feeling frustrated and seeking independence and control is something common for all teenagers, in any context. However, because of migration, it’s like they’re living that times ten.”
These are just a few of the ways MSF provides medical humanitarian care to children. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this work without the dedication of MSF supporters like you. Our donors are the backbone of the work we do, and we’re so grateful to our generous global community.
Without adequate care, a child’s earliest years can be the most deadly in many of the places where our teams work. Your support will provide lifesaving care where it's needed the most.
Thank you,
