Heritage Takes On 'Woke' Smithsonian |
|
|
Go woke, go broke: Last year, Heritage Senior Fellow Mike Gonzalez co-authored a piece exposing a preview exhibition for the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of the American Latino. The op-ed called the exhibit “an abashedly Marxist portrayal of history, religion, and economics.” Last week, Time magazine and the New York Times reported that as a result of the op-ed, The Smithsonian decided to pull the plug on a second planned exhibit about youth movements. That's not the end of the story.
- This July, a group of Latino Republican congressmen led a vote to eliminate the museum’s funding in next year’s budget, calling its view of Latinos insulting and inaccurate.
- Then on Friday, 23 Hispanic leaders and activists, including Gonzalez, sent a letter to lawmakers saying that it would “be very naïve for Congress to be swayed by any assurances from the Smithsonian’s leadership that they will take action to rectify the museum’s content.”
Gonzalez appeared on Fox News and called the museum a “travesty.”
