A Different Way of Thinking: Mental Health and Incarceration
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is observed the first week of October to raise awareness of mental illnesses, fight discrimination, and provide support. In observance of MIAW, we are sharing our resource, A Different Way of Thinking: Mental Health and Incarceration, that can be shared with friends and loved ones.
For years, mental health was a topic many people avoided, but awareness is on the rise. Both incarcerated people and their families often deal with mental health struggles. We sat down with Maria Amaya, a clinical therapist and Prison Fellowship® prison ministry manager, who has worked with people both inside and outside of prison, to learn more.
For the past four years, Create: New Beginnings®—created by women for women—has been turning dull prison rooms into places of beauty and life transformation. This program has the potential to impact women outside of prison as well, which is why Prison Fellowship partnered with Tyndale House Publishers to make Create: New Beginnings available to women across the country as a book.
