Hi John.

I wanted to provide you with an update after my message below from yesterday. As you may know, thankfully both the House and Senate agreed on a bill to keep the government open, which is now law. I voted for this bipartisan bill to protect our economy and hardworking Kansans.

While I don’t agree with every piece of this legislation or how it was rushed to the House floor without bipartisan cooperation, it does avert a harmful government shutdown in the short-term. It also gives congress more time to work towards a bipartisan agreement that keeps our government open for the long-term.

I understand many people remain concerned about this partisan brinksmanship and gridlock. I share that frustration. Despite the mess in Washington, my focus is on concrete and bipartisan solutions that make a difference for Kansans.

That includes working with Republicans and Democrats on legislation that protects Kansans’ Social Security benefits, lowers the cost of groceries and gas, and ensures our federal workers and servicemembers are paid.

I’m here to serve every person and corner of our community to the best of my ability, regardless of party. Whether we agree on every issue or not is beside the point. Everyone deserves a government that works for them – not just for special interests, big corporations, or the extremes of either party.

If you have any questions or would like to share your views, please feel free to contact me. Listening to you always helps me do better.

My warmest regards,

Subject: Urgent shutdown survey for John:

Hi John.

As you may know, the federal government may shutdown tomorrow. This would prompt widespread, drastic consequences for our economy and hardworking Kansans.

I understand this dysfunction is exactly what makes people so upset with Washington. I am doing everything I can to push for a pragmatic, bipartisan compromise to keep our government open.

My job is to serve every person and corner of our community, regardless of party. It’s especially important for me to listen to you at a time like this, so please click below to begin taking my survey >>

I’ve reached out to Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy with a coalition of representatives from across the nation, to make it clear we’re eager to work with him and keep the government open in a bipartisan way. I’ll keep advocating for Kansans and focus on solutions, and I’m hopeful we can put politics aside.

This cannot be about politics. A shutdown would have real consequences on people’s lives.

It means inexcusable delays to paying our military servicemembers and federal employees. It means interruptions to Social Security benefits. And it means increases in hunger for women and children.

My focus is on keeping the government open and solving the real problems Kansans face. That includes lowering the cost of groceries, gas, and prescription drugs.

Both parties must take immediate action to keep the government open. You can count on me to keep pushing for progress for as long as it takes.

I look forward to hearing from you.
