John,
URGENT: Early voting starts this weekend for Louisiana’s “jungle primary” for governor, and Primary Election Day is October 14th. Jeff Landry, endorsed by Trump and Trump Jr., has amassed a considerable war chest and according to recent polling, has a chance to walk away with the governorship based solely on the primary vote.
The dangers of the “jungle primary”: The crowded field of over a dozen candidates in the jungle primary provides Landry with an opportunity to win the election outright. In a jungle primary, the two top vote getters advance to a head-to-head runoff election in November. But if one of them gets more than 50% of the vote in the primary, they are declared the winner and there will be no November election. This is dangerous since many primaries are overlooked by voters. Our goal is to get out the voters to deny Landry a 50%+1 majority in the primary and force a general election in November.
According to the Shreveport Times, “... there is little dispute that Landry crafted a lead out of the gate because of prolific fundraising and early endorsements from the Louisiana Republican Party and former President Donald Trump…(ours) is the first poll showing him at 40%.”
The best outcome for Democracy is for us to force a November runoff–specifically by driving up votes for Landy’s opponents. Early voting started September 30th, so the time to get cracking is NOW. We need to drive up voter turnout, push pro-democracy candidates, and prevent Landry from reaching 50%. Remind voters, one-to-one why every vote matters and why we need them to vote ASAP. Join below.
