Hi, In two of the last six presidential elections, the candidate who lost the popular vote won the presidency anyway — thanks to our current Electoral College system. As a result, while Democrats have won the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections, Republicans have picked five out of eight Supreme Court justices picked during that same period, paving the way for wildly unpopular and destructive decisions including Citizens United and the decision overturning Roe v. Wade. That’s not democracy. It’s minority rule. The polling data on the likely nominees for the 2024 presidential election shows that there’s a very realistic chance that it could happen again, and our democracy may not survive this time.1 But we can take action now to make sure that doesn’t happen by convincing enough states to join the National Popular Vote Compact to guarantee that the candidate who gets the most votes in 2024 wins the election.
National Popular Vote Compact is a bottom-up strategy whereby states representing 270 electoral votes agree to allocate them to the winner of the national popular vote. Already, 16 states comprising 205 electoral votes have gotten on board, and if we can add just a few more states to join, it will ensure no president can be elected while losing the popular vote.2 No other democracy on earth has a system that allows the candidate with fewer votes to win — and it’s the reason we have a Supreme Court so wildly out of step with the American people. Let’s be 100% clear: Demand Progress is a nonpartisan group, and we don't endorse or oppose any candidate. We believe in democracy and majority rule — and the National Popular Vote Compact is a simple, achievable fix to get it done. Demand Progress Action has been advocating for the National Popular Vote Compact for years, and it’s closer than ever to reality. But we can’t risk another presidential election in which the Electoral College hands the election to the loser of the popular vote.
