Kevin McCarthy sets up GOP showdown after his Saturday surrender
After entering the weekend without a clear path to keep the federal government open, a badly weakened Speaker McCarthy called his own bluff and sided with marginally less fascist Republicans and sensible Democrats to avert a catastrophic shutdown, opening the door to an imminent no-confidence vote by radical, right-wing toddlers cosplaying as lawmakers in his own caucus. Will Kevin survive? Who cares. The Republican Party is clearly incapable of governing, no matter which goon holds the gavel.

House approves stopgap funding bill with none of the budget cuts demanded by far-right Republicans
While Kevin McCarthy had previously and repeatedly said that bringing a clean spending bill to the floor that Democrats could support would count as surrender, yesterday he did just that, as the House voted 335 to 91 to fund the government, albeit for a paltry 45 days, without any of the draconian cuts to services or extreme border measures demanded by radical, right-wing buffoons holding Congress — and the country — hostage.

California Republican and MAGA darling who opposed #MeToo movement accused of killing and dismembering fiancée
42-year-old Navy veteran Joseph C. Roberts was charged with murdering and dismembering his 27-year-old fiancée, Elizabeth Imani Buckner, after her remains were found inside a bag along the Alameda, California, shoreline. Buckner’s body, which was missing its head, hands, and feet, was found wrapped in black trash bags and duct tape, along with DNA evidence linking Roberts to the heinous crime. A timely reminder that the Trump administration enthusiastically propped up Roberts — who had been accused of sexual harassment years before — as a poster boy for male "victims" supposedly wronged by the #MeToo movement.
California governor signs law to bolster eviction protections for renters
Democratic Gov. and perennial adult in the room Gavin Newsom signed a badly needed new law bolstering eviction protections for renters and closing a loophole that allowed asshole landlords to circumvent the state’s rent cap, which was established to rein in runaway rent prices. The new law also allows the attorney general, local government, and renters to sue dirtbag landlords for wrongful evictions and illegal rent increases.

Judge blocks 2 provisions in North Carolina’s heinous new abortion law
US District Judge Catherine Eagles issued an order halting enforcement of two provisions — one requiring surgical abortions that occur after 12 weeks for cases of rape and incest be performed only in hospitals, not abortion clinics. While it's certainly no victory in the fight for actual reproductive freedom, any sensible pushback to Republicans' all-out, theocratic assault on bodily autonomy is worth noting.
