Dear Neighbors,
Today, I joined an overwhelming bipartisan majority of my colleagues from both parties in the House in voting to prevent a government shutdown and fund the government for the next 45 days as we negotiate a longer-term agreement.
I urge the Senate to quickly pass this measure and send it to the President’s desk to become law and officially avert a government shutdown that would seriously harm the health, safety, security, and economic well-being of the American people and our servicemembers. This afternoon’s agreement is a significant shift from the stalemate of recent weeks, and I am cautiously hopeful that this compromise represents a step forward toward an enduring agreement to fund vital government services for the next year. Until such an agreement is reached, I will continue to work with members of both parties to find a compromise that avoids a government shutdown in November and sustains the vital programs on which Americans depend.
