House Oversight Committee chair James Comer (R-KY) issued subpoenas on Thursday targeting James Biden’s Lion Hall Group and JBBSR, Inc., seeking records related to President Joe Biden’s corporation, "CelticCapri Corp," which received nearly $10 million in 2017 with unspecified revenue line items. This move follows concerns about the legitimacy of services provided by James Biden’s companies.
James Biden, President Joe Biden’s younger brother and Hunter Biden’s uncle, had business dealings with CEFC China Energy Co., an organization closely tied to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The 2020 Senate Report by Sens. Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson revealed wire transfers between Hunter Biden's firm, Owasco, and James Biden's consulting firm, the Lion Hall Group. Owasco sent 20 wires totaling $1,398,999 to the Lion Hall Group between August 2017 and August 2018. These transfers raised questions about potential financial improprieties.
Hudson West III, linked to CEFC and the CCP, also sent funds directly to the Lion Hall Group. James B. Biden was identified as the principal contact for the Lion Hall Group during this period.
CEFC, chaired by Ye Jianming, a Hunter Biden associate, was closely tied to the CCP and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Hunter received a $1 million retainer fee for legal services from Ye in 2017, along with an $80,000 diamond. Ye had connections to Chinese intelligence while arranging deals for the Bidens.
In June, it was revealed that the Biden family received $5.1 million through multiple accounts shortly after Hunter Biden's 2017 WhatsApp messages to a CEFC associate, where he mentioned Joe Biden's involvement and demanded payment. These messages suggested a strong connection between the Bidens and CEFC.
Hunter also expressed reluctance to register as a foreign agent for CEFC in 2017. Special counsel David Weiss subsequently indicated that Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) charges against Hunter were under consideration, and Hunter was charged with three gun violations in August.
The subpoenas reflect growing scrutiny of financial transactions involving James Biden's companies and their connections to CEFC and the CCP.
