Dear Neighbors,
For the last few weeks, I have been working with colleagues from both parties to try to prevent our government from shutting down on Sunday. Congress is in session today, and I will continue to do everything possible to avert a shutdown starting at midnight. That said, unfortunately, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy refuses to work with the sizable majority of Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate to prevent a shutdown by honoring the agreement he made in May with President Biden. That compromise, codified as the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, which I joined a majority of members from both parties in approving, laid out the funding levels for the next two years, provided Congress with a clear, bipartisan framework to prevent government shutdowns and avoid damaging, unnecessary cuts to essential programs. So far, Speaker McCarthy has been unwilling to stand up to the most extreme members of his party who have so far opposed any compromise agreement to avert a government shutdown.
What does that mean for our community? For the duration of any government shutdown, my staff will continue to work, responding to your urgent cases and answering any questions you may have. Please visit the Shutdown Information page on my website for any answers to frequently asked questions. Many federal agencies will be forced to furlough staff, which will slow response times and, in some cases, may suspend their services all together. This may include but is not limited to passport appointments, assistance with Social Security, Medicaid, IRS as well as Veterans Affairs. For assistance, please contact my office by calling (847) 413-1959, emailing me at [email protected], or sending a message through my website at https://krishnamoorthi.house.gov/contact/email.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi presents Leyden Family Service and Mental Health with a check for $266,059 in federal funding he secured for the SHARE Program.

On Saturday, I presented Leyden Family Service and Mental Health with $266,059 in federal funding I secured for its Start Here Addiction Rehabilitation and Education (SHARE) Program. Leyden Family Service has been serving our community since 1952, and has helped more than 500,000 people receive counseling, treatment, and preventative care services for adults, adolescents, senior citizens, children, and entire families. The SHARE Program, located in Hoffman Estates, has served more than 40,000 people through its alcohol and drug detox rehabilitation facility. The funding I secured will go towards needed renovations for SHARE’s facilities so it can more comprehensively help clients and families in our community.
I was also honored to be named Leyden Family Service’s Person of the Year on Saturday for my efforts on behalf of families in our region. This award is deeply meaningful for me, especially from an organization with such a long history of serving our community. I look forward to continuing to work with Leyden Family Service and the SHARE Program to serve those in our area harmed by the opioid epidemic.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi with Reps. Joyce Beatty, Kelly Armstrong, and Adrian Smith in front of Mount Rushmore.

Earlier this month, I had the honor of joining my colleagues Reps. Joyce Beatty (D-OH), Adrian Smith (R-NE) and Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) just miles from Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota to be presented with the 2023 Roosevelt Leadership Award by the Franklin Center for Global Policy Exchange. This award, named for President Theodore Roosevelt, is presented to those who embody the same qualities and characteristics that our 26th President embodied. While I find such a comparison and honor humbling, I like to think I share President Roosevelt’s commitment to public service and to working effectively with members of both parties. Our country has always had its differences and divisions, but that does not mean we cannot work together to advance our common interests as American, and I was grateful for the opportunity to enjoyed celebrating the importance of bipartisanship with my colleagues during the award ceremony.
