In 2018, I became the first Democrat to win Virginia’s 7th district since 1968. I won because I listened and heard the stories, concerns, and hopes of those I hoped to represent, and I let their stories drive me on the campaign trail and in my work in Congress.
I met people where they are, across the district in libraries, kitchens, basements, churches barns, firehouses, backyards, and even in an Aikido dojo. I met people across our ten counties and listened, I was present and accountable to each and every person I met.
I engaged around the issues that matter to people in their everyday lives and I discussed our shared values and priorities, but I didn’t do it alone. Our team of volunteers literally walked thousands of miles, knocking on doors and engaging voters across our ten counties. These voters responded to our message and our volunteers, and ultimately my request for their vote.
