Dear John,
Congress is running out of time to act before the federal government shuts down and runs out of money—but instead of creating a sound compromise, far-right members of the Freedom Caucus are pushing to shut down the government, refusing to support funding the government unless their outrageous demands are met. These demands range from demonizing immigrants to attempts to stop holding Trump accountable, all the way up to attempts to impeach President Biden.1
Speaker Kevin McCarthy's decision to open an impeachment inquiry (without a vote) simply to satiate the desires of MAGA extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene shows exactly what we've known all along: The MAGA movement has taken hostage of Congress and is acting in the interests of Trump, not the American people. This is nothing more than a costly stunt to baselessly attack the President.2
Speaker McCarthy shouldn’t cave to extreme, far-right members who are threatening to shut down the government. Tell Congress and Speaker McCarthy: No impeachment and no shutdown.
House Republicans' threats to shut down the government would be devastating for hardworking people. Going through with this political stunt would mean that essential services (e.g. making sure our drinking water is clean, keeping our national parks open, ensuring Social Security checks go out on time) could be in jeopardy.
This extreme effort from House Republicans is an expensive distraction from our priorities, and everyday people will pay the price. Will you sign the petition to demand Congress fund the government and reject a shutdown?

It's clear that Republicans' goal is to prevent President Biden from being able to effectively govern and to pave the way for Donald Trump's re-election. And they'll do so at the expense of the most vulnerable in our society. We know better, and we know the millions of people in America who rely on these services and these jobs are not a part of Republican priorities.3
Speaker McCarthy already made a budget deal with the president; he needs to keep his word and keep the government open without catering to extremists within his own party. A deal is a deal, and we must prevent a government shutdown to ensure essential programs continue to be funded and deliver for everyday Americans.
That's why we're asking all members of Congress to say no to a politicized, partisan, reckless agenda to shut down the government.

Thanks for all you do.
