The deadline is approaching for Congress to pass a bill that keeps the government funded, but due to Kevin McCarthy's poor leadership within his own party — it may not happen.

The small faction of extremist MAGA Republicans have been enabled to hold our government hostage and are forcing a government shutdown to score cheap political points, devastating everyday Americans.

A shutdown would have devastating effects on children, seniors, and hard working Americans:

• 65,000 children would lose access to childcare;
• 60,000 seniors would be robbed of nutrition services like Meals on Wheels; and
• 50,000 workers would lose an average of $1,000 in back wages they are owed.

These are real, tangible, impacts of ineffective leadership. And while they play politics, our communities' most vulnerable are left to deal with the consequences of their actions. That is plainly inexcusable.

The shutdown also has cascading impacts across countless industries, including aviation and air transportation.

Just this week, the Biden Administration warned that a government shutdown could disrupt air travel by jeopardizing the work the administration has done to address a shortage in air traffic controllers, modernize aviation technology and reduce flight delays and cancellations that have plagued travelers. Consider this:

• Roughly 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 T.S.A. officers who would have to work without pay; and
• 4,000 fewer rail safety inspection days next year alone, with nearly 11,000 fewer miles of track inspected annually.

We need to ensure that the sensible leaders who are willing to quit hyper-partisanship and in-fighting in favor of providing real solutions to their constituents win in 2024.
