Hi John — I have a few free minutes in my schedule today, and I wanted to take this time to share something with you.

Before I was elected to Congress, I spent my career as a registered nurse working for the Obama administration to expand access to health care for folks in Illinois and across our country — from helping implement the Affordable Care Act , to working with communities to prevent, prepare for, and respond to public health emergencies, fighting for our democratic values has always been my number one priority.

Throughout my career, I’ve seen firsthand just how critical it is to have quality, affordable health care coverage in the moments people need it the most, and what a difference policies like the ACA made for working families across the nation.

But in 2017, things took a turn. At that time, Republicans had control of both chambers of Congress and Donald Trump was in the White House — and for many Republicans, repealing the ACA was their number one priority. You can imagine my frustration as Republicans were gearing up to repeal the ACA and the protections we fought so hard for, like coverage for folks with pre-existing conditions — this was personal. But, I decided to go to our former Congressman’s only town hall that year and hear him out.

So here I am, this nurse who worked to expand health care with the ACA, who has a pre-existing condition of her own, and when our former Congressman said he’d ensure protections were still in place for folks like me, I believed him. But shortly after, he voted for an ACA repeal bill in Washington that was anything but that — promising to make health care less accessible and more expensive for millions of Americans.

I knew right then and there that I had to do something. So, I made a decision to run for Congress and work hard to make sure our working families get the health care they need, strong jobs that pay good wages, excellent public schools and safe environments to continue to grow and thrive. Folks like you supported me because you believed in that work, too — and in 2018, we made history.

Since then, I’ve been fighting my heart out for the people of Illinois, and we’ve made some incredible progress. I’ve had 14 pieces of legislation enacted into law — including lifesaving legislation to lower the cost of insulin, the Health Care Affordability Act to lower health insurance costs and premiums, and the Protecting Moms Who Served Act to improve maternal health care for our veterans and help save moms' lives.

We have a lot to be proud of, but John, I’m only just getting started. We still have a lot of work to do to make life better for Illinois’ working families, but I know this team can accomplish anything when we work together.

So today, I’m humbly asking you to pitch in to my campaign for Congress to keep this work going. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and keep pushing for progress, and I’ll need you with me every step of the way.
