Five takeaways from MSF’s study on unsafe abortions
Women living in conflict settings are far more likely to suffer severe complications from unsafe abortion
Unsafe abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal death worldwide, and a study conducted by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and partners found that women in fragile or conflict-affected settings are at an even higher risk of developing severe complications from unsafe procedures. In the hospitals MSF studied in Nigeria and Central African Republic, more than half of women admitted for abortion-related complications arrived with severe symptoms—five to seven times higher than at hospitals in more stable African settings.
"We need to invest in improving communities' knowledge of safe contraceptive and abortion methods ... and make post-abortion care and safe abortion care easily accessible," said Dr. Estelle Pasquier, a medical researcher at MSF’s research arm Epicentre and co-leader of the study.Read more from this important report >
