This past month, we have celebrated several environmental wins as well as several environmental setbacks. Earthjustice is involved in more than 500 legal matters, each with its own twists and turns, and keeping them going in the right direction is a team effort. That’s why action-taking is so important, and we thank you for speaking up for your values.

Some environmental victories we’re excited to share include protecting the Arctic from future fossil fuel development, protecting the Badger-Two Medicine area in Montana from oil and gas development after a four-decade long fight, and a series of wins against fossil fuel companies seeking to build large petrochemical facilities in Louisiana and the Ohio River Valley.

Meanwhile, we are disappointed that a court order removed protections for the Gulf of Mexico whale habitat. The government had tried to exclude the whales’ territory from Lease Sale 261, an offshore oil and gas lease sale that is mandated under the Inflation Reduction Act. The court order is a fossil fuel giveaway that endangers the critically endangered species, whose global population is down to about 50 whales. In addition, the Biden administration released their 5-Year Program for offshore oil and gas drilling, proposing to hold three lease sales between now and 2029 in the Gulf of Mexico. The finalized plan reflects a considerably slimmed-down version from the draft plan, which included 11 lease sales. Nevertheless, these sales would lock the U.S. into up to 70 additional years of offshore oil and gas extraction.

Build a clean and equitable electricity grid

As we move towards a 100% clean energy future, we need to urgently build more power lines to move clean energy across the country. Thousands of renewable energy projects are waiting years for approval to connect to the U.S. electric grid. More than 2,000 gigawatts of solar, wind, and battery storage projects are languishing in the queue according to the Department of Energy. That’s more power than the U.S. generates. Join us in calling on FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) to to act on these recommendations.

Protect the endangered Gulf of Mexico whale from extinction

The Rice’s whale, also known as the Gulf of Mexico whale, can be as big as a railroad boxcar and as heavy as a typical fire truck and is the only large whale species that lives year-round in the waters of the United States. And because of fossil fuel exploration development and other human activities, it is also the most endangered large whale species in the world. Join Earthjustice in urging the Biden administration to fully protect the endangered Gulf of Mexico whale from extinction.

Protect our public lands from fossil fuels

For decades, the federal oil and gas program has shortchanged taxpayers and provided numerous financial giveaways to oil and gas companies. The oil and gas industry pays far less than market rates to exploit federal public lands and routinely leaves the public on the hook for cleaning up the messes they make. We cannot allow the oil-and-gas industry to profit off federal public lands while it torches the climate. Tell the Bureau of Land Management to end financial giveaways to the fossil fuel industry and implement measures to tie fossil fuel leasing and drilling decisions to our greenhouse-gas reduction goals.
