I'm writing this morning to ask you to make a $3 contribution before tonight's official FEC fundraising deadline. But before I do, please give me a chance to explain why this request is so important to our campaign.

The truth is that — second to being a mother — my job as a member of Congress and fighting for working people every day is one of the joys of my life. It's a privilege, an honor, and a blessing — one I have never taken for granted.

But if someone were to ask me what my least favorite part of this job is, I'd immediately say it's the obscene amount of money that it takes to win an election.

It's why so many of my colleagues in Congress — yes, on both sides of the aisle — are quite happy taking checks from corporate PACs, or Wall Street billionaires, or fossil fuel giants.

It's why so many people in Washington spend more time on the phone with big donors or at fancy fundraising galas than they do on the ground in their communities.

It's why our country's campaign finance laws have been gutted, and super PAC dark money is able to run rampant across our political system.

It's because it's easy. And it's because usually, that's just how it's done. Par for the course.

When I made my decision to run for Congress, I knew that wasn't how I was going to do things. The power of our progressive movement starts and ends with the grassroots — which means that I need to lean on you for support, especially today.

So I wish I didn't have to ask. But fighting for our movement and building the kind of campaign we need to win is something that we can only do together. Which is why I have to:
