Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Thanks to everyone who contacted Congress to protect community needs in the federal budget! No matter what happens, elected officials must protect food assistance, health care, and other programs that help millions of people across the U.S.
Help us keep up the pressure. Tell your representatives: NO cuts to community needs in the FY24 budget! [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
The latest on Stop Cop City: Earlier this month, our Stop Cop City coalition submitted more than 116,000 voter signatures to the city of Atlanta. That’s nearly double the number needed to put Cop City to a vote. Last week, Atlanta’s City Council passed a unanimous resolution in support of our efforts. How to support unions and striking workers: [link removed] Labor unions raise wages for members, reduce inequality, and improve access to family-friendly benefits. They also help set the standards for other employers. Here are some ways we can all show solidarity with unions and demand economic justice for all, writes AFSC’s Rick Wilson.
New national poll shows support for a just, equitable Farm Bill: [link removed] The Farm Bill, which is authorized every five years, governs our food system in the United States. It’s also a critical opportunity to reduce hunger, improve food access, and address climate change. A new poll conducted by AFSC shows most people in the U.S. want lawmakers to pass a Farm Bill that promotes the health of all people and the planet. Read more about our survey from AFSC’s Liz Smith.
Supporting local farmers in New Mexico: [link removed] Small-scale farmers and their traditional practices are essential to communities in New Mexico. That’s why AFSC supports their efforts by providing them with material aid and technical know-how to be sustainable and thrive. Read more about our work with local farmers from AFSC’s Patrick Jaramillo.
The blue barrels that offer a lifeline to migrants lost in California’s harsh desert: [link removed] For 24 years, an all-volunteer organization has been installing barrels of water in Imperial County’s deserts to prevent migrants from dying from dehydration and environmental exposure, writes AFSC’s Pedro Rios. With rescues on the rise, it’s time for the U.S. to reverse inhumane policies that force migrants to take dangerous crossing routes. (CalMatters)
