Working and Voting to Avoid a Shutdown

September 29, 2023

Friend,

I am working to avoid a shutdown of the federal government. At midnight tomorrow night, funding for the U.S. government will lapse unless a stopgap measure is passed by both the House and the Senate, then signed into law by the president.

The entire spending process in D.C. is BROKEN and needs to be fixed. That said, what’s the current status of funding the federal government? Let me break it down:

Earlier this week the House passed 5 spending bills, including:

  • Department of Defense
  • Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs
  • Department of Agriculture
  • Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Department of Homeland Security

In comparison, the Senate has passed ZERO.

It is now painfully clear that the 12 critical spending bills Congress needs to pass to fully fund the federal government will not be finished by tomorrow night. This is why a stopgap measure is needed to keep the government open while negotiations are completed. Unfortunately, a bill that would have done just that failed on the House Floor earlier today.

While I am disappointed we were unable to get the stopgap measure across the finish line, this will not divert me from my work to break through the gridlock to keep the government open and secure the border.

In the meantime, during the ongoing lapse in funding, programs including Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicare, and Medicaid will remain unaffected. In addition, important services, including those provided by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Postal Service (USPS), will continue.

In case you missed it, I joined Bloomberg TV yesterday to discuss the ways I’m actively working to fund the government in a fiscally responsible way. Watch my interview below:

Survey Question:
Recently, the House passed a defense spending bill that included a 5.2% pay increase for the U.S. military. Including, the largest pay raise for junior enlisted servicemembers of an average of 30%. Do you support this pay increase for our military?
