I am deeply saddened that earlier today we lost California’s senior
senator and the longest-serving woman in the U.S. Senate: Senator Dianne
Feinstein.

Her passing is a great loss to many across California and the nation as a
whole. Sen. Feinstein was a true trailblazer who dedicated her life to
serving others in her community, her state, and her country. From serving
as Mayor of San Francisco for three terms to serving as a U.S. Senator for
three decades, Sen. Feinstein did an enormous amount of good.

As Mayor, she led San Francisco through a time of tragedy in the aftermath
of the assassinations of City Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George
Moscone.

Sen. Feinstein went on to break glass ceilings when she became
California’s first woman senator in 1992, noted as the “Year of the Woman”
after more women were elected to federal office than ever before.

In the Senate, she led the way on gun violence prevention by authoring the
1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, spoke out against torture while serving
on the Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence, fought for LGBTQ+ rights
and marriage equality by voting against the Defense of Marriage Act in
1996 and successfully repealing it in 2022, and helped shepherd through so
much more positive change for our state and our country.

Sen. Feinstein was a titan, and California and the United States are
better off because of her leadership. I send my deepest condolences to her
loved ones during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Rob
