Dear Friends,
After a frustrating week in Washington, I wish I could bring you better news from Congress. Unfortunately, it looks like extreme MAGA elements in Congress will force a government shutdown this weekend, an outcome that House Democrats worked hard to prevent. I will provide you with an update on the implications for the State of Illinois and share some more positive developments from the past week.
Federal Government Shutdown

The federal government's funding is set to expire on September 30th, triggering a government shutdown. An extreme MAGA-led shutdown will result in unpaid work for troops, harm to small businesses, potential disruptions in air travel, and threaten access to food assistance for families. It is difficult to comprehend why House Republicans would choose to harm working families, undermine our economy, and jeopardize national security with an unnecessary shutdown. I am dedicated to supporting the Second Congressional District, and my office will remain open to assist constituents throughout the shutdown. Furthermore, my office has prepared responses to frequently asked questions regarding the shutdown and has compiled information about its potential impact on Illinois and the Second Congressional District. Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act Signed Into Law
President Biden signed into law the bipartisan Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act (H.R. 2544), which I introduced with Rep. Larry Bucshon, M.D. (IN-08). This critical legislation will expand the pool of entities that can contract with the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) and modernize the system to protect and expedite the organ transplantation process. It will allow for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to run a competitive process to choose from the best contractors for different national OPTN functions (e.g., health IT, logistics). A better-performing national OPTN will better serve patients across the country and save lives.
