Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes NO on Ukraine Funding Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes 'NO' on Ukraine Funding H.R. 5692, the Ukraine Security Assistance and Oversight Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2024, would provide $300 million to Ukraine. I was proudly joined by 117 Republicans on voting NO on this legislation. Support for Ukraine in the House has now lost the majority of the majority. Per Conference rule, Ukraine funding cannot be brought up again on the House Floor. Ukraine is not the 51st state. I have voted NO on every dollar of Ukraine assistance, though billions have been appropriated by Congress. I am in Congress to fight for the United States of America, especially those in TX-22. As we continue to fight historic inflation here in our own country, we need to start putting Americans FIRST. Rep. Nehls Speaks on Term Limits at the House Judiciary Committee Legislative Markup This week, the House Judiciary Committee held a markup on various legislative priorities. During the hearing members of the Committee debated H.J.Res. 11, which would limit members of Congress to only serve three (two-year) terms and members of the Senate to serve two (six-year) terms. While I support term limits, I believe that limiting members of the House to only six years is insufficient and does not allow members the time to serve our country most effectively. It also implies that the House is inherently less than the Senate. I disagree. Therefore, I introduced an amendment to H.J.Res.11, in order to raise the term limits for House and Senate members to 12 years each. Unfortunately, both this amendment and the underlying resolution failed to attain the number of necessary votes to pass. I will continue to fight for term limits. When I ran for Congress, this was one of my first promises to you. Washington, D.C. needs to be run by those whom the American people elected, not lifetime bureaucrats, staff, and lobbyists. Watch my remarks from the markup HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes NO on Extending Government Funding When Republicans took the gavel in January, we made a promise to the American people to pass 12 individual spending bills and avoid a continuation of former Speaker Pelosi's bloated spending levels. This week, the United States House of Representatives voted on H.R. 5525, the Spending Reduction and Border Security Enhancement Act, which would extend government funding through October 31, 2023, by way of a last-minute Continuing Resolution, without the inclusion of E-Verify, a web-based system that allows employers to verify the eligibility of employees to legally work in the United States. As you know, funding for the federal government expires on September 30, 2023. While this bill makes significant spending cuts and enhances border security, it allows illegal aliens to remain in our communities and continue to wreak havoc across the country. I remain committed to fighting against out-of-control, reckless spending. I refuse to adhere to the traditions of the Swamp. I remain committed to restoring fiscal sanity in Washington, D.C. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Sends Letter to the FTC with Concerns of Child Exploitation Material on Instagram and OnlyFans Children should not be victims of crime for the financial gain of social media companies. This is why I am calling on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to immediately investigate both Instagram and OnlyFans and establish effective guardrails for credit card companies that allow the purchase of content displaying the sexual abuse of children. We must do everything possible to protect our most vulnerable from this horrific Epstein Island-like industry and pursue their traffickers to the fullest extent. Read more about the letter HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes on Appropriations Bills The United States House of Representatives voted on several separate spending bills including the passage of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill, the Department of Defense (DOD) appropriations bill, and the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs appropriations bill for Fiscal Year (FY) 2024. I am encouraged by the efforts of House Republicans to craft fiscally conservative bills that prioritize securing our homeland, resume and finish construction of the border wall, hire a record number of border patrol agents, provide for the highest level of ICE detention beds, counter China, and promote American values at home and abroad. Many of my priorities were included in each of these spending bills. I remain committed to ensuring that your hard-earned taxpayer dollars are put to proper use. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Recognizes Dr. Beth Pelz for her Service to the Houston Community I spoke on the House Floor to recognize Dr. Beth Pelz, who taught as a criminal justice professor at the University of Houston-Downtown. Dr. Pelz played a very important role as one of my professors. At the same time, I attended the school for my master’s degree. She helped shape and mold countless public servants and law enforcement officers through her dedicated service. I wish her a well-deserved retirement. She truly means the world to me. Love you, Beth! Watch my remarks from the House Floor HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces the Drone Research and Innovation for Law Enforcement Act of 2023 I introduced the Drone Research and Innovation for Law Enforcement Act of 2023, which would establish a pilot research program within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the use of non-lethal de-escalation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for law enforcement officers, leading to safer outcomes for officers and the communities they serve. Every time a law enforcement officer leaves for work and begins their shift, they put their lives on the line to protect and serve their community. Advances in technology present a new opportunity to mitigate the risk for both our law enforcement officers as well as citizens involved in high-risk scenarios. The use of de-escalation drones would allow law enforcement officers to cover a larger distance in a shorter amount of time, drastically changing public safety outcomes. As a law enforcement officer, I know all too well the dangers our nation's law enforcement officers face every day to protect their communities. It is imperative that those who put their lives on the line to serve us are equipped with the tools they need to protect communities across the nation. I will always support my brothers and sisters in blue. Read more about my legislation HERE. This Week in TX-22 Rep. Troy E. One of the privileges of serving in the United States House of Representatives is the opportunity to nominate outstanding young people from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be considered for appointment to our nation’s service academies. Admission to a service academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must meet the minimum standards set by the individual academy. Second, the candidate must complete the congressional application by October 6, 2023, to be considered for an interview in our office with the nomination review board. Please note, the ultimate selection of appointees rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees.
