Jack, this is pathetic. A government shutdown (with all its awful implications) is now almost inevitable, because Kevin McCarthy cannot handle the extreme MAGA nihilists in his party.

McCarthy's days as Speaker have been terrible for America, but there is a way out of this mess.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is a true leader who enjoys unanimous support from his party. While it took McCarthy an embarrassing 15 votes to be elected Speaker in January, all Democrats present voted for Jeffries each time.

Given the GOP's narrow majority, we need only five Republicans to vote for Jeffries in order for him to become Speaker.

Jack, Kevin McCarthy is clearly out of his depth; unable to lead and repeatedly boxed in by MAGA power grabs. He doesn't even have the respect of his own party, much less the ability to advance legislation. We need to put an end to his dysfunctional "leadership."

First, we watched MAGA Republicans take 15 rounds of votes to elect a Speaker of the House. Then, they held our economy hostage with the threat of default and nearly triggered a job-killing recession. Now, with their impending government shutdown, they're jeopardizing military readiness and essential government services.

Hakeem Jeffries is an impressive leader who has served in Congress for 10 years, and has a well-deserved reputation as a consensus builder. As Rep. Pete Aguilar reminded the House: "[Jeffries] does not traffic in extremism. He does not grovel to or make excuses for a twice-impeached former president. He does not bend the knee to anyone who would seek to undermine our democracy." Sounds like the right person for the job.

McCarthy's ineptitude hasn't gained him any goodwill. House Republicans running in swing districts are tired of being forced to take bad votes and cater to the hard-right flank. MAGA nihilists like Matt Gaetz and Freedom Caucus members threaten to remove McCarthy from the speakership nearly every week because he's not ruining the country fast enough for them. Senate Republicans are openly warring with their House colleagues. Jeffries taking over the gavel would be a gift to the embattled "Speaker."

We cannot continue to be held hostage by extremist lawmakers who have repeatedly demonstrated contempt for this country. It's time for real leadership. To save themselves, and the country, so-called moderate Republicans need to replace McCarthy with Jeffries.
