A new report out this week from People For highlights the rights and protections that are on the line in the docket for the Supreme Court’s next term, which is set to begin this coming Monday. The current 6-3 far-right majority will no doubt continue their efforts to turn back the clock and upend decades of hard-won progress.

Disturbing new reporting from our team at Right Wing Watch highlights how religious-right activists, encouraged by the overturning of Roe, are ramping up their efforts to make the Supreme Court even more conservative than it is with its current 6-3 majority. Activists are delving deep into the religious views, church attendance, and families of conservative judges considered possible Supreme Court nominees under a future Republican president, and making “red lists” of judges they deem unacceptable.

Book banning is on the rise, and authoritarian attacks on the freedom to learn seem to be coming from all around us. In Temecula we are directly countering extremist school board members who are wreaking havoc on the school district and nationally we are fighting back against book banning extremist Moms for Liberty who are behind many of the recent censorship attacks. Last week the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA) was reintroduced in Congress. The bill, named after the civil rights icon John Lewis, will be critically important in confronting the rising tide of recently enacted voter restrictions and rebuilding the robust voter protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

This legislation gives us the opportunity to right historic wrongs and help ensure everyone can exercise their right to vote. While the legislation faces an uphill battle in the current Congress, we must continue our calls for reform to be prepared for action in the next Congress. Most Americans believe abortion should be legal in most cases. In every state where voters have voted on the issue since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, voters have sided with reproductive freedom and against abortion bans.

But the first Republican presidential debate made it clear that public support for reproductive freedom will not stop Republican politicians from kowtowing to the party’s anti-choice zealots calling for radical measures, including a nationwide abortion ban.
