More than 600,000 low-income adults will now have Medicaid coverage.

NNU - Medicare for All!

This is a promising step forward:

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper just announced this week that Medicaid expansion will go into effect across the state on December 1, 2023.

We know that we normally reach out to you about our fight to win Medicare for All, but this is huge news. The long-awaited expansion could grant more than 600,000 low-income adults with health care coverage through Medicaid.

This victory didn’t happen overnight: it took over a decade of organizing and advocacy by health care justice groups across the state. NNU nurses were proud to play a role in this fight — joining lobby days at the Capitol, sending letters, and more.

North Carolina was one of the few states left in the country that still hadn’t expanded Medicaid. Now, this expansion will bring hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians affordable health insurance coverage, saving an estimated 1,200 lives per year. And it will disproportionately help low-income families, veterans, and those living in rural parts of the state.

Our end goal is to achieve guaranteed health care for ALL people across the country through Medicare for All. As we continue to advance our movement for a single-payer health care system, let’s take the time to celebrate wins like this one.

In solidarity,
