We do have news to share about the escalating anti-democratic effort to keep No Labels off the ballot in 2024.
As reported by CBS News yesterday, the Democratic National Committee is now distributing extensive talking points to its state party chairs stating that No Labels is a “direct threat to democracy.”
The “Important talking points on No Labels” encourage elected officials to denounce No Labels “NOW,” while they still have an “opportunity to shape” the conventional wisdom about the No Labels ballot access effort.
They even have handy tips on the best ways to attack: “Issue a statement on social media, put out an open letter, use media appearances.”
Does no one at the Democratic National Committee understand what time it is?
They’re pulling this JV power play at a moment when the government is shutting down, when public trust in government is at a 70-year low and when two-thirds of the public does not want the Trump-Biden rematch both parties seem intent on forcing upon us.
Do they really think American voters will stand for a few distant elites trying to limit and manage our choices when so many clearly want more?
No party or leader can credibly claim to stand for democracy if they allow this kind of antidemocratic behavior to continue.
We know what former President Trump thinks of democracy. Not much. But last year, President Biden gave a speech on the “Continued Battle for the Soul of the Nation,” in which he said, “We are still an America that believes in honesty and decency and respect for others, patriotism, liberty, justice for all, hope, possibilities.”
“Liberty.”
It’s a great word.
But it’s more than a word.
It’s an idea – derived from the Latin word libertas – and it means “free to choose.”
If the Democratic National Committee listened to what Biden said last year, it’s very clear what should happen next.
Democratic National Committee leaders should shut down their campaign to keep No Labels off the ballot and to limit the constitutional right of Americans to choose their representation in government.
They should make it clear they are committed to giving all Americans the voice and choice they want and deserve.
At No Labels, we certainly are, and we thank you for standing with us and joining our effort advocating for a measure that will hit lawmakers where it hurts – their pocketbooks. It’s called "No Budget, No Pay," and the premise is simple: if Congress can't pass a budget on time, then they shouldn't receive their salaries until they do.
