Hi there, John, it's Mark Takano.
I'm reaching out personally to ask you to
chip in $3 to elect Will Rollins in CA-41. But first, here's a story about me and I'm so invested in this race.
In 1994, my Republican opponent outed me as gay by sending out bigoted, homophobic campaign mailers in our race.
This was before I'd even come out publicly.
And you might be familiar with the person who did it -- Ken Calvert, the same Republican Will Rollins is now running to unseat.
These days, homophobia to this degree would be unthinkable for most folks. But the sad truth is, we've seen it creeping up more and more in recent years.
GOP-led state legislatures are passing one discriminatory law after the other. Across the country, teachers and parents are being shamed for wanting their children to be accepting of everyone –
regardless of who they love.
Meanwhile in Washington, guys like Calvert have been more emboldened than ever to pass discriminatory bills aimed at the gay community.
Calvert claims he’s since changed since he decided to out me, but his voting record says otherwise. He voted against the Matthew Shepard hate crimes bill. He voted against gay adoption and voted to keep us out of the military.
I can’t think of a stronger rebuke of Calvert's long-standing, anti-LGBTQ agenda than by replacing him with an openly gay prosecutor like Will who will uphold the law and fight for equal rights.
Will’s race happens to be one of the most consequential elections in the country in the Democrats’ effort to retake the House. He can win, but he’ll need your support to do it. If you can, please send in $3 or more before Will’s end-of-quarter deadline tomorrow night.
