Greetings,
We hope you have had a great week! Congressman Kim was in Washington this week continuing to push toward a common sense solution to avoid a government shutdown. A shutdown would have damaging consequences for people across our district and across the country. Please see additional thoughts below regarding the possible shutdown.
We also want to wish everyone celebrating a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
As always, we hope you find these updates and resources helpful.
Important Notes on a Possible Government Shutdown
Funding for the federal government is set to expire at midnight on September 30th/ October 1st. While Congressman Kim has continued to push in Washington for a practical, pragmatic solution to avoid a shutdown, including a deal that was previously agreed on by leadership, House Republican leaders continue to move forward with a wishlist of extreme policies as the looming deadline quickly approaches.
Congressman Kim is firmly against a government shutdown and continues to prioritize commonsense and bipartisan solutions that keep our government open, and protects the critical services and benefits relying on federal government funding. To name one example, this includes 7,900 active duty servicemembers from New Jersey who would be required to continue serving our nation without being paid for it. Government shutdowns are disruptive to working families, seniors, our economy, and our local communities.
Congressman Kim and our office will continue to work full-time on your behalf if a shutdown occurs. While we may have reduced ability to assist people, as many Federal Agencies will close, we will continue to do our best to assist and encourage you to contact our office for help with a federal agency issue.
If a shutdown begins, on October 1st our office will provide additional information on our website to provide any guidance we have about what the shutdown means for federal services and agencies.
PACT ACT DEADLINE SATURDAY: New Deadline for Veterans Deployed to Combat Zones
Through the PACT Act, veterans who deployed to a combat zone, never enrolled in VA healthcare, and left the military between September 11th, 2001 and October 1st, 2013 are eligible to enroll directly in VA healthcare. This special enrollment period ends THIS SATURDAY September 30th, 2023 at 11:59 PM.
The opportunity allows veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other combat zones the opportunity to directly enroll, without first applying for disability compensation benefits. Visit VA.gov/PACT or call 1-800-MYVA411 to learn more and sign up for VA health care before the deadline.
