PROGRAM UPDATES:
Water Drop

Our September water drop took place last week and we are so grateful to all of our volunteers who joined us to drop over a dozen gallons of water as well as care packages filled with canned food, electrolytes, socks and messages of love for migrants crossing through the dessert. The temperatures climbed to the high 90s and we hiked over 6 miles to our drop sites and back. This group was well organized and respectful, and we could not have done such important life-saving work without them.
We are committed to assisting our migrant siblings, as well as ensuring our volunteers do so in the safest way possible.

If you would like to join our October Water Drop, you can sign up on this newsletter! For more information you can email our coordinator at [email protected]. You can find both our wishlist and donate to our Water Drop program through here ([link removed]) .

Camino de Salvacion was the designated shelter for this month, and although we weren’t able to visit last Saturday, we will head there for our October Caravan of Love! If you purchased items through out wish list, they will still make their way there.

We extend this thank you to everyone who continually supports our work and programs on their behalf:

“Good afternoon, we are here at Camino de Salvacion, we want to take this moment to thank Border Angels for their donation which enables us to purchase meals, and so that all these people who are here can enjoy the 3 meals served per day. Thank you for everything you do. THANK YOU BORDER ANGELS!”

News Spotlight:

Bodies of 2 migrants, including 3-year-old boy, found in Rio Grande
On Wednesday, the Texas Department of Public Safety located a 3-year-old migrant boy in the Rio Grande, near the border town of Eagle Pass, after receiving reports of a child being "swept away" by the river's current, according to agency spokesperson Ericka Brown. The toddler, who officials said was traveling with his family, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

On Thursday morning, Texas state troopers in Eagle Pass observed another body submerged in the Rio Grande, Brown said, noting that the Maverick County Sheriff's Office was investigating the death. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

Both bodies, Brown added, were found north of the floating barriers Texas set up in the Rio Grande to deter migrant crossings. A federal judge earlier this month ordered Texas to move the buoys to the riverbank, finding that a lawsuit filed by the Biden administration was likely to prevail in court. But a federal appeals court paused that ruling while it reviews the case, allowing Texas to keep the marine barriers in place.

In fiscal year 2022, U.S. Border Patrol recorded more than 850 migrant deaths, according to internal agency data obtained by CBS News. That figure, which surpassed the 546 deaths recorded in fiscal year 2021, is likely an undercount, officials and experts said, due to incomplete data. In a report earlier this year, a federal watchdog found that Border Patrol did not collect and record "complete data on migrant deaths."

Activists tour the California desert leaving water and food for migrants: “they are welcome”
The group of activists decided to tour the California desert at points where migrants usually travel and leave them water, hats and food in their wake. Leslie Ceballos, who is part of the Border Angels organization, says that she wanted to help because his father had to make the difficult journey when he was 14 years old.
