Blog from the Leader: Working with our traders to build a thriving modern market As a proud born and bred Oldhamer, I've been shopping at Tommyfield Market for several years - more years than I would like to admit. So with all those happy memories of shopping there with my family, with my friends and now with Oldham Council colleagues, I was absolutely delighted to meet up with our Tommyfield Market traders last month and talk to them about our shared plans for Oldham's new market. I wanted to organise the meeting to provide an update on the transformation of Spindles into the new market, food hall, and events space, and give traders the opportunity to share their views and ask questions - giving us the chance to keep working their ideas into our plans as they develop. Hartford Mill chimney to be demolished The owners of Hartford Mill are going to knock the chimney down on Sunday, 1 October at 10am – so if you hear a loud bang you know what it will be! Residents living close to the demolition site, in Werneth, have been updated on the plans and will be evacuated while the explosion takes place, returning to their homes soon after. A number of road closures and diversions will be in place before and during the demolition so you may want to avoid the area. The demolition will mean the site can be cleared so it can then be used for much-needed new housing in the future. The council does everything it can to support building on brownfield land, to reduce pressure to build on the greenbelt. This site is a great example of that. |

Making Oldham Town Centre greener and better We're making Market Place on High Street in Oldham more beautiful and green. Starting in 2024, we'll add new gardens, comfy seating, and nice pathways, like we did on Albion Street and Henshaw Street. To begin, we'll remove a flowerbed near Primark, but the nearby kids' play area will stay. We're replacing the flowerbed with cool green spaces full of flowers, plants, and trees. This project aims to improve the town centre, creating a lovely park for families and friends to enjoy. To learn more about the changes, check out our webpage. |
