Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn My friend, Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn... IN THE DISTRICT While we're a compassionate nation and city, our country has laws in place to protect the safety, security and economic well-being of American citizens. The current influx of migrants across our southern border and into New York City has become unsustainable and unsafe not only for our community, but for the migrants themselves. Here's what our office is doing to stop it... Earlier this month, I hosted members of the Natural Resources Committee on a tour of migrant shelters across New York City, including Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field, as a follow up to legislation and a lawsuit I've introduced to prevent migrant housing on military bases or in our national parks. The Committee honored my request for an oversight hearing to continue discussion on this topic, which I participated in earlier this week. WATCH Our witnesses included the U.S. Park Police, Republican City Council Member Joann Ariola, and Democrat State Assemblymember Jaime Williams, who all stand with me in opposition to the creation of a shelter at Floyd Bennett Field. READ MORE Our parks aren't the only thing the city is attempting to take away from residents. Homes for the Homeless, a non-profit organization, recently cut a shady and lucrative deal with the City to turn Island Shores Senior Residences into a migrant shelter, kicking out dozens of seniors - including veterans - forcing them to find new homes. I joined local colleagues in hosting a bipartisan press conference alongside Frank, a 95-year-old Korean War veteran who was forced to leave his home at Island Shores, highlighting this issue and calling on the City and Homes for the Homeless to be transparent about when talks of turning this facility into a shelter began, and answer for where these veterans were forcibly relocated. As I've been saying for over a year, our City is NOT required by law to house migrants. In fact, a Supreme Court Judge on Staten Island ruled "Right to Shelter" does NOT apply to those residing here illegally, and that the City must close the shelter it opened at St. John Villa Academy. Instead of using our tax dollars to appeal this decision, Mayor Adams should accept that this shelter violates the law and make St. John Villa Academy the 1,000 seat school Staten Island students were promised and deserve. WATCH MY INTERVIEW ON NY1 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL WATCH The number one responsibility of government is to secure our nation and protect our constituents...that's why securing the southern border is at the center of this government funding fight. I joined Speaker McCarthy to highlight just how bad the migrant crisis in New York City really is and why it's so important for Congress to use the leverage we have to force the Biden Administration to take action. New York City Mayor Eric Adams broke the City’s commitment to our civil servants when he forced our retirees to change their health plan without any notice or input. Our teachers, firefighters, police officers, sanitation workers, and other municipal workers did not deserve this bait and switch. I joined Rep. Ritchie Torres in introducing bipartisan legislation to rectify rectifies this injustice and give them a choice in their earned healthcare benefit. READ MORE READ MORE Our seniors have worked hard and paid taxes their entire lives and they deserve to have access to the best health care options and savings available. I’ve joined Rep. Fischbach in introducing The Hardworking Seniors Act to allow seniors enrolled in Medicare Part A to make contributions to Health Savings Accounts and receive the tax benefits that go with it. New documents released by the House Ways and Means Committee show Hunter Biden made millions off of the Biden family "brand," used Air Force 2 as a shuttle for business while his father was Vice President, and "opened doors" to senior government officials. House Republicans are connecting the dots and working to expose corruption at the highest levels of our government. LEARN MORE After years of delay, our office expects the first contract for the East Shore Seawall to be issued by the end of the year for an interior drainage portion near South Beach. We also expect another contract for a separate drainage portion near Midland Beach to go out in 2024, that will tie into the existing New Creek Bluebelt. While in Congress I'm proud to have gotten the project timeline back on track after endless redesign requests made by the City and to have secured the federal share of funding needed to complete the project. IN THE NEWS Gov. Kathy Hochul signs NY vote-by-mail law — and top GOP members immediately sue A new law approved by Gov. Kathy Hochul Wednesday will allows New York voters to cast ballots by mail instead of in-person for the 2024 elections — but the ink wasn’t even dry when Republican bigwigs sued to block it from taking effect. The law will have the state Board of Elections create a program giving all registered voters the opportunity to vote early by mail in advance of an election. Voters will be able to request mail ballots up to ten days prior to the election and election officials will then provide mail ballots with postage paid return envelopes. But GOP elected officials quickly filed a lawsuit trying to quash the measure, saying it leaves elections vulnerable to fraud and does not pass constitutional muster. READ GOP rep at 9/11 terror hearing blows hole through claim NYC migrants fully vetted New York counterterrorism, police and fire officials were questioned at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Manhattan Tuesday about whether the approximately 110,000 migrants who have arrived in the Big Apple from the southern border complicate security posture 22 years after the 2001 terror attacks. During the House Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology field hearing, Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., argued that "nearly every single one" of those 110,000 migrants who have arrived in New York City have come through a legal port of entry and have been vetted, arguing, "that’s part of the reason why there has been so little criminal activity" stemming from those so-called asylum seekers. Yet, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., noting how the Department of Homeland Security was created post-9/11, countered that claim, stating dozens of individuals in the New York City shelter system created by Mayor Eric Adams to house migrants "have been arrested and released back onto our streets."
