Fighting for $10 per day child care at the White House this summer

When I was invited to the White House for their Child Care Summit I knew I needed to stand up for working families and parents not only in North Carolina but also across the country.

With the Summer over, parents are scrambling to piece together a mishmash of friends, family, neighbors, co-ops, and daycare facilities to be sure their kids have a safe place to be while their parents are working.

For rural parents, it can be even harder. Childcare deserts, areas where there are no readily available childcare facilities, are prevalent in rural communities. So, from organizing carpools and baby-sitting rotations to asking the boss for fewer hours and calling out at the last minute, families are strained by tight schedules and increasingly tight budgets.

Affordable childcare is a basic necessity. It can't wait, it can't be bargained down, and it can't be pushed aside.

So we're doing something about it.

The Biden Administration is pushing to:

*Cap costs to $10 per day for families earning under $200,000
*Cap child care copayments for working families at 7% of a family's income for those participating in the Child Care & Development Block Grant program
*Change pay structure for childcare workers so that providers are paid on time, not retroactively, allowing businesses to function better and incentivizing folks to take jobs in the childcare industry
*Modernize the application process to allow families to apply for childcare assistance online, instead of only by paper applications

These are great strides, but the work isn't done. Families across the country are feeling the childcare pinch. We at the One Country Project are fighting for these families and we need your help.
