I took the chance to talk about something I’ve come back to again and again since setting out on this campaign. Growing up, my family was incredibly blessed. My sisters and I grew up in a state that took care of its people, that had our backs. When my twin sister and I needed speech therapy, we had resources available in our community. Our mom could sleep a little easier at night knowing that her service as a teacher would secure her a good retirement someday.
Life wasn’t perfect—and we certainly had folks in our community who lacked the same blessing we did—but it never felt like the world was against us.
But the number of families who can say the same has fallen pretty dramatically over the last decade of Republican governance, John. Our government has turned its attention away from making people’s lives better. The GOP majority has been more concerned with cutting corporate tax rates and trying to police what women can do with their bodies when they ought to have focused on generating sustainable, long-term prosperity for our communities.
The result has seen some short-term gains, but all it takes is a cursory glance at the numbers to realize that their short-sighted policies have put North Carolina on a rapid collision course with fiscal disaster, and they just doubled down on it with their new budget. If we’re going to head off that looming cliff, we need change. We need someone in charge of our state’s treasury who is going to actually prioritize our state’s greatest asset, it’s people.
That’s what this campaign is about, John, and with your help, we can make that dream a reality and get back to being a state where anyone can reach their potential and thrive.
John, our records show that over the last few months, I still haven’t convinced you to make a contribution to our campaign. I totally understand that—I’m pretty choosy about these kinds of things myself, and I know that sometimes it can be a lot to ask of people. But as we approach our September fundraising deadline, I could really use your support so that we can keep pace with our monthly goals. If and only if you can afford it, can I ask you to please make your first contribution to our campaign today? Any amount you can give helps.
