How the tobacco industry markets vaping nicotine as stress relief

Some e-cigarette manufacturers have used a similar strategy to market e-cigarettes that tobacco companies used for decades to sell cigarettes: advertising them as stress relievers. However, research shows nicotine use can increase stress levels and amplify symptoms of anxiety and feelings of depression.

Are low nicotine cigarettes better for you?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently authorized one brand of low nicotine cigarettes, and has indicated that it plans to create a rule that would require all cigarettes to have minimally addictive or non-addictive levels of nicotine. Very low nicotine cigarettes (VLNCs) can help smokers reduce the amount of nicotine they use, which can help them wean off cigarettes and eventually quit. Another advantage of VLNCs is they are less addictive to new users and youth, and therefore they are less likely to hook young people to cigarettes in the first place. It’s important to note that while cigarettes with reduced nicotine levels can help reduce the addictiveness of these products, it does not mean they are safe.
