Like most of our readers, I’m not a journalist myself. While I have the utmost respect for what my colleagues do, I’m not involved with their day-to-day work. So when I sat down with local government reporter Charlie Wolfson to talk about the technology he used in a story, I was expecting an overview of something that helped him compile information, or perhaps an editing or visualization tool.
What he showed me instead was the portal to a trove of dense federal court documents — full of potential news, but at a cost for each page. While costly in both time and money, those resources were well spent, as they were used in a story on the campaign contributions and influence of one of the County Executive candidates. Charlie told me, “What this lawsuit did for us was it connected people, and established some facts that were key to putting this story together. [...] We definitely could not have reported this without the information we got in PACER, and I think it was a really useful story for voters ahead of that election.”
