Dear John,

Today we have released National’s fiscal plan which will restore discipline to government spending, lower taxes and reduce net debt.

This is what New Zealanders need from their government. Responsibly managing the finances will help us rebuild the economy.

We have put our tax and spending commitments together very carefully.

New Zealand has the worst current account deficit in the developed world, meaning collectively we are living beyond our means.

Only National has a plan to rebuild our economy to reduce the cost of living.

In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis we must also prioritise supporting New Zealanders and the public services you rely on.

Our fiscal plan has 5 key principles:

- Return to surplus and reduce debt – National will achieve a surplus in 2026/27, reduce government debt (down $3.4 billion compared with PREFU forecasts) and provide buffers in future spending allowances.

- Support frontline services - National will support frontline services, and prioritise increases in funding for health and education to account for inflation.

- Invest in infrastructure - National will invest in infrastructure to boost productivity and contribute to New Zealand’s economic recovery, including making a $3.7 billion contribution to the National Land Transport Fund.

- Restore discipline to government spending – National will reduce spending on bureaucracy, better manage social welfare expenditure, and end funding for failed programmes like Auckland Light Rail.

- Deliver tax relief for hard-working Kiwis - National will provide tax relief of up to $250 a fortnight for an average-income family with young children in childcare.

Our plan will deliver tax relief for New Zealanders, prioritise funding for infrastructure and frontline services; fund a small set of new policy commitments, and leave significant buffers of unallocated spending for future frontline services.

Early voting opens on Monday and New Zealanders have a clear choice about the economic future they want.

You can change to a strong, stable National-led government that will rebuild the economy, stop Labour's wasteful spending and drive down the cost of living.

Or you can choose more of the same wasteful spending, higher taxes and no delivery from a Labour, the Greens and Te Pāti Māori coalition of chaos

This election will be close. Don't leave it to chance. Only a Party Vote for National can change the government and get our country back on track.

Thank you,

Nicola Willis
