My name is Shira, I’m part of the legal team here at Brady and I’m reaching out about a critical threat to our national safety: Unregulated, untraceable, and unserialized ghost guns.
Without regulation, these firearms do not require a background check, meaning anyone – including minors and prohibited purchasers – can get a kit online and assemble these deadly weapons at home.
The lack of regulation on ghost guns is exactly why they’ve become weapons of choice for criminals and their proliferation cannot be ignored. In 2017, law enforcement recovered 1,600 ghost guns. Merely four years later, in 2021, 19,000 ghost guns were recovered. That’s a 1000% increase in ghost guns recovered from crimes, friend.
This is exactly why President Biden enacted executive actions to properly classify dangerous ghost guns as firearms, subjecting them to existing, common sense firearms regulations. Unsurprisingly, the gun lobby immediately began a legal battle against the rule. They would rather let Americans die than update firearm regulations to address our modern realities.
A federal judge in Texas recently ruled in the gun lobby’s favor, a ludicrous and deadly decision that meant Biden’s rule could not be enforced nationwide, which would allow thousands of untraceable ghost guns to flow into our communities. Thankfully, the Supreme Court froze the judge’s order, allowing Biden’s rule to stay in effect. But this is only temporary while litigation continues to keep the rule in effect permanently.
Brady is leading the charge against the gun lobby, supporting President Biden’s lifesaving rule, but we can’t win this fight alone.
