Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz has secured unprecedented federal funding to invest in urban forestry projects around the state.

Washington will receive more than $36.3 million in federal funds to help combat extreme heat and climate change and improve access to nature. The Department of Natural Resources will also open applications for an additional $7 million in grants to help communities grow their urban tree canopies.

We know that a lack of tree coverage in cities contributes to hotter temperatures, greater pollution, and higher noise levels. With growing concerns over extreme heat, we need new strategies to prepare while at the same time working to correct existing inequities by investing in our communities.
