Friend, if you haven’t heard about this Big Oil lawsuit yet, do I have news for you!
On the heels of the passage of SB 253, the strongest corporate greenhouse gas emissions disclosure in the world, California is now taking its accountability to the next level. The State of California has decided to directly sue the world’s largest oil companies for their contributions to the climate crisis.
This isn’t the first time oil companies have been sued for the damage their industry causes on the environment and to communities, but it is by far the most significant.
The truth is, fossil fuel companies have known exactly how their products would contribute to climate change, and yet for decades chose to purposely mislead the public and double down on their production.
Attorney General Rob Bonta and Governor Gavin Newsom are seeking to hold these giant oil companies accountable for their deception and damage to the State of California through this lawsuit.
California has spent tens of billions of dollars fixing up climate disasters and that number will only continue to rise. If California wins this lawsuit, Big Oil will finally have to pay their fair share for the prevention and recovery of these extreme weather events that they are the primary cause of.
