Because Kevin McCarthy can’t govern
and Republicans can’t get their extremist, deeply unpopular agenda passed,
they want to shut down the government.
They’re playing political games with people's lives, and as always, it’s
the most vulnerable who will suffer.
A Republican shutdown could mean:
* Evictions would spike.
* Seniors could be left without Social Security or Medicare help.
* Millions of women and children could lose food assistance — including
over 125 THOUSAND in Massachusetts.
* Federal workers and contractors will be missing paychecks, including
over 7 thousand in my district.
* Disaster relief for impacted communities would be delayed.
This is unconscionable. Republicans should advance a simple funding bill
to keep the government running and continue to provide the basic,
essential services people need. You know, do their jobs.
And as a cherry on top, thanks to this Republican cruelty, our communities
are facing not only the threat of a government shutdown, but also the
financial cliff of student loan payments resuming October 1st.
I want to be extremely clear: If Republicans force us into a government
shutdown – then I’m calling for the Administration to put a freeze on
student loan repayments.
Throwing borrowers back into repayment with bad faith loan servicers and
an under-staffed Department of Education is a recipe for disaster.
While the Administration works diligently to push back on the corrupt
Supreme Court’s obstruction of President Biden’s historic cancellation
plan, freezing repayments during a shutdown is the bare minimum we can do
at a time when the infrastructure is not there and bad actors will seize
on the lack of government capacity.
This government shutdown stands to harm families across the nation, and I
will do everything in my power to prevent it.
Yours in service,
Ayanna
