This fight is personal to Barbara. From her segregated hometown to the halls of Congress, she has never stopped fighting for what’s right. She’s lived through the challenges and issues that many of our communities still face today – and that’s what makes her such a valuable and fierce advocate for progressive change.

Barbara was once a single mother on public assistance who couldn’t afford child care, so she had to bring her children to class with her to keep working toward higher education and set herself and her family up for success. She even escaped a violent marriage and went on to author California’s first Violence Against Women Act.

She knows what it’s like to stand in solidarity and be the only “no'' vote against the open-ended authorization that led to our costly, unjust forever wars overseas. And her experience seeking an abortion in Mexico as a young woman led her to become a fierce defender of abortion rights.

Whether she’s leading the charge to protect a person's right to choose, fighting to lift people out of poverty, recommitting herself to the fight for civil rights, voting rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights and more – Barbara is not afraid to stand on the side of justice.
