John,

August is Black Philanthropy Month, so I wanted highlight just how important Black-led nonprofits are to advancing racial wealth equity.

Black-led organizations often fill the needs of Black and Brown communities that would otherwise go unmet. For example, in a recent survey, nearly 60 percent ([link removed]) of BIPOC-led organizations were openly pushing for pro-racial equity policies, compared to 41% of White-led organizations.

Black-led nonprofits are critical to meeting the needs of our community, but here’s the problem: they often struggle to raise the funds ([link removed]) needed to create meaningful impact in the communities they serve.
* Black-led nonprofits are woefully underfunded. Only 1% of all community foundation funding goes to Black communities, resulting in an estimated $2 billion deficit.
* Revenues of Black-led nonprofits are almost 25% less than that of White-led nonprofits.
* The unrestricted net assets of Black-led nonprofits are over 75% less than White-led nonprofits.
* BIPOC nonprofits are 13% less likely to receive money from corporate donors than White-led nonprofits.

At the Greenwood Initiative, we recognized there’s also a lack of disaggregated data by race that can help Black-led nonprofits find additional solutions for their communities. Wealth data frequently tells the story of only the general public, masking potential racial disparities and making it more difficult for policymakers to put forth effective measures.

To combat this trend, we established the Black Wealth Data Center ([link removed]) with the hope of giving communities better access to the data needed to develop policies and programs to shrink the racial wealth divide and help Black-led organizations continue to meet the needs of their communities.

We can – and we must – strive to do better. If you would like to know more about the work we do, you can learn more here ([link removed]) .

Warmly,

Garnesha Ezediaro
