Now is the time for platforms to start putting critical safeguards in place to protect democratic integrity during elections.
Hi there --
With more than 50 countries set to hold elections in 2024, online platforms must proactively protect democracy. And right now, they’re falling short.
Yesterday, we unveiled Democracy by Design, a framework endorsed by civil society organizations to protect election integrity in the major elections happening next year. The framework proposes a set of recommendations for online platforms rooted in their own design principles and policies — and in many cases, backed by their own research — to mitigate the threats of AI and election interference in democracies across the world.
The Democracy by Design framework focuses on recommendations in three major areas:
Bolster resilience through targeted friction and context to mitigate harm. Warnings before sharing old articles or tools to slow down disinformation from spreading can go a long way.
Counter election manipulation via safeguards against bad actors and automated systems. What would it look like if users were alerted and given the choice to change the order of their social media feeds before major election seasons? Or if ads that used generative AI were labeled as such and monitored more closely?
Establish paper trails to foster trust through meaningful transparency. From everyday users to independent researchers, everyone should have access to how platforms enforce their policies during elections.
With bad actors having exploited Big Tech platforms in 2016 and 2020, and the emergence of increasingly sophisticated generative AI tools, the urgency for Big Tech to fortify its readiness for next year's major elections is undeniable. Our democracy depends on it.
Thanks for taking action,
