Political stunts don’t.

Dear John,

Every day I hear from people all across San Francisco that they no longer feel safe in the neighborhoods where they live, work, shop, and raise their families. Protecting our community is the job of the mayor, but half-baked political stunts and empty rhetoric won’t keep us safe.

The incumbent mayor’s latest stunt? Criminalizing poverty by drug testing people receiving welfare, instead of going after drug dealers and rampant retail theft.

This is not a serious solution. It is out of touch with our San Francisco values, it will only hurt those in need, and will most likely increase crime. We need real solutions from leaders who are willing to put in the work—not a third-term mayor recycling decades-old policies that have never worked.

That is why I introduced legislation this week that will require police foot patrols in our neighborhoods.

Foot patrols build trust between our communities and the police, which makes for safer neighborhoods. It’s a proven strategy that works in partnership and collaboration with our community, not by cracking down on civil liberties.

We also know that foot patrols help dramatically reduce car break-ins, retails thefts, and other property crime—and violent crime.

And this isn’t just rhetoric: in response to my legislation, the SF Chronicle reported “[a] 2021 study published in the Cambridge Journal of Evidence-Based Policing found that even short stints on foot in known hot spots for crime can reduce violent incidents by up to 40%.”

At the end of the day, the mayor has the most power to address crime and policing. We need a mayor who will lead, and I need your help to bring real San Francisco solutions that work to the Mayor’s Office.

Can I count on you to make a contribution ([link removed]) to our campaign today?

Thank you,

Ahsha
