Ethical Framework Proposed for Human Research in Commercial Spaceflight
Historic Opportunity to Promote Diversity & Benefit Society 

The first ethical framework for conducting human research on commercial spaceflight was proposed in an article published today in Science by a global team including Hastings Center president Vardit Ravitsky. Ravitsky’s contribution focused on promoting diversity among the researchers and participants, which is essential to ensuring the research benefits society at large. The Terrible Toll of Institutionalization of People with Disabilities

Writing in The Atlantic, a journalist invokes the work of Joel Michael Reynolds, a Hastings Center senior advisor and fellow, to make sense of the legacy of harm her aunt suffered in Willowbrook, the scandal-ridden New York State institution for children with intellectual disabilities. “After she left Willowbrook, Adele would abruptly shout ‘Stop hurting me!’ for no apparent reason. Her care team assumed she was having hallucinations, a plausible postulate. But isn’t it equally plausible to theorize that she was reliving some unspeakable abuse from her past? Or, as the Georgetown philosopher and disability studies professor Joel Michael Reynolds puts it (speaking my thoughts aloud): ‘Why isn’t that a completely reasonable response to PTSD?’” Read the article. Ellen Jewett, MBA, MSc, is managing partner and founder of Canoe Point Capital, LLC, an investment firm focused on early-stage social ventures.

Stacey Lane, JD,  is a member of the board of trustees of Montefiore Hospital and of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx and a member of the advisory board of the Master of Science in Bioethics program at Columbia University.

Amrit Ray, MD, MBA, is a physician-researcher and a biopharmaceutical industry R&D executive. He is passionate about advancing medical breakthroughs and championing health care access for patients.
