Have you ever been stuck somewhere with little space to move?

Around the globe, more than six billion hens raised for eggs live in cages without room to even spread their wings.

Over the past few years, people like you have gotten dozens of food companies to commit to sourcing only cage-free eggs in their global operations. Unfortunately, some companies have excluded countries in the Global South from their pledges or have not reported any progress in regions such as Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East.

To urge these companies to publish global progress, Mercy For Animals released the 2023 International Cage-Free Equity Index in close partnership with 15 organizations spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. This report tells the public which companies unfairly exclude animals and consumers in the Global South from their cage-free commitments.

Shake Shack is one of those companies. They promised the public that they would stop using eggs from cruelly caged hens across their global operations by 2025. But as of 2023, Shake Shack stopped sharing progress toward their cage-free goal outside the U.S. and UK.
