THE WEEK'S BIG 3
Texas continues to be a hotbed for extremism and antisemitism, driven by the heavy presence of white supremacist and anti-LGBTQ+ groups that are headquartered or active in the state, according to a new report from ADL. In an effort organized by ADL, several prominent trustees and alumni of the University of Pennsylvania signed an open letter expressing “deep concerns” over the school’s controversial decision to host a Palestinian cultural festival featuring multiple speakers who have demonized Israel and voiced antisemitic rhetoric. A new study finds that Google-owned YouTube is the worst offender among four major social platforms when it comes to running ads on content
associated with hateful extremism and white supremacy.
Read on for more on these headlines, news you can use to fight hate and the latest info about ADL from around the country.

Extremists Have Turned Texas Into a Hotbed for Hate, Report Finds
“Since 2021, the report found, antisemitic incidents in the state have jumped by 89%, and there have been six “terrorist plots” in addition to 28 “extremist events” such as training and rallies. Texas also led the nation in white supremacist propaganda last year; had the most residents charged in relation to the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection; and, in March, saw a neo-Nazi and extreme misogynist gunman kill 8 people at an Allen shopping mall.” Texas Tribune:

Top UPenn Supporters Protest Their Alma Mater’s Controversial Festival
“’The University of Pennsylvania should be doing all within its power to distance itself from the event’s antisemitic speakers, make clear that such antisemitism is wholly at odds with the university’s values, and take proactive steps to ensure that Jewish students, faculty and staff are safe and welcome at Penn,’ the signatories write in the letter, which was organized by the Anti-Defamation League.” Jewish Insider:

Yesterday the State of PA issued a Cease & Desist Letter to the organizers of the #PalestineWrites festival for their unauthorized use of a state logo, falsely claiming sponsorship. No surprise. Thanks to @GovernorShapiro for your swift action and courageous leadership in standing up against hate.

Study: YouTube is Generating Music Videos for White Supremacist Groups
“On each platform, the researchers plugged in 130 search terms they’ve identified as the names of hate groups and movements to see what came up. They found that YouTube served ads on the search results page for 67 of those terms, including some ads from well-known brands. Instagram and Facebook displayed ads on only a few of them, while X was in between.” The Washington Post:

Following Yom Kippur, we can comment on the standing ovation received by a veteran of the Nazi's 14th Waffen SS Division in the Canadian parliament. While we appreciate the apologies of the Canadian government, this should have never happened in the first place. It's an affront to Canadians & the wider Jewish community. We echo our friends in Canada - there must be a thorough explanation of how this appalling incident was allowed to happen, and ensure that steps are taken so that it never happens again.

It brings me such joy to see Yiddish making a comeback, especially at a time of rising antisemitism. Yiddish not only carries a long cultural heritage, but also has the ability to express nuanced emotions and situations in ways that other languages cannot.
