** 📊 Black LGBTQ Youth Mental Health
------------------------------------------------------------

In our latest research brief, we examined the mental health of Black LGBTQ youth and their access to care. We found that, while Black LGBTQ youth experience rates of depressed mood and suicidality similar to all LGBTQ youth, they are also significantly less likely to receive professional care.

** 🏛️ Virginia and Oklahoma move to protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy
------------------------------------------------------------

This month, both the Virginia House of Delegates and state Senate passed a bill to make it illegal to practice conversion therapy on minors. And in Oklahoma, the state’s Youth Mental Health Protection Act passed a House committee with overwhelming bipartisan support in the state’s first pro-LGBTQ state legislative vote.

** 🏥 Comparing suicidality disparities by sexual identity and age
------------------------------------------------------------

In a white paper published this month, we analyzed federal data to compare findings on suicidality among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth ages 18–25 vs LGB high school students. The paper highlights that disparities in suicidality between straight and LGB adolescents persists into young adulthood:

LGB young adults ages 18–25 were more than four times as likely to report planning and attempting suicide in the past year compared to straight peers.

Our Advocacy team is engaged in on-going efforts to expand the collection of gender identity in federal surveys so that government data can also inform the needs of transgender and/or non-binary youth.

Together with global sports company PUMA, we’ll foster positive mental health outcomes for young LGBTQ athletes through research and the development of a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on LGBTQ youth athletes, mental health, and intersectional inclusivity in sports. PUMA has committed $1 million to support LGBTQ youth over three years. We are excited to work toward a future in which every LGBTQ young person feels safe and supported by their sports teams, organizations, and communities!
